In 1832 Koji published a book with twenty pictures of flowers and birds appropriately titled Kachō Gafu (i.e., Picture Album of Flowers and Birds). Fourteen of the pictures (i.e., pictures 1-14 in this gallery) were drawn in the style of his teacher Hokusai Katsushika. A distinctive feature of Hokusai’s style is the enlarged head and beak of birds. The remaining six pictures (i.e. pictures 15-20 here) were copies of pictures drawn in a different style by Masayoshi Kitao. The latter were published in the 1793 edition of Raikin Zui (i.e., Pictures of Imported Birds). Masayoshi drew both the shapes and colors of birds more accurately than did Hokusai. Koji kept the shapes drawn by Masayoshi but not the accurate colors. Click on a picture to enlarge it.
